How to get to Kawarau River: choose the destination

Planning how to get to Kawarau River starts with a precise destination. Kawarau Falls is at the Lake Wakatipu outlet near Frankton, the historic suspension bridge is farther along the river, and the gorge continues towards Cromwell. A map pin for the river alone can lead to a different part of the valley from the one your activity uses.

Use Queenstown Airport (ZQN) as the arrival point, then separate the journey to your base from the journey to an activity. Central Queenstown is useful for several departure points. For the bridge visitor area, follow the suspension bridge guide; for a broader road itinerary, read about the Kawarau Gorge.

Airport buses and Frankton connections

Orbus connects the airport terminal area with Frankton and central Queenstown. Stops are near the terminal, and Frankton Bus Interchange is the place to consider onward local connections. Route 2 runs between Frankton Hub and Arrowtown. Read the route destination carefully rather than treating every bus from Frankton as a service to the historic bridge.

Under the Orbus tariff dated 29 September 2026, an adult journey costs NZD 2.50 with a Bee Card. Cash fares are NZD 10 to or from the airport and NZD 4 within the normal Queenstown network. Payment on board is by Bee Card or cash; bank and credit cards are not accepted. Prepare your bus payment separately from your general travel spending.

Taxi and transfer from Queenstown Airport (ZQN)

For a taxi or prearranged transfer, give the exact destination: a Queenstown address, Kawarau Falls, the historic bridge centre or Cromwell. Ask for the fare for that journey and the pickup arrangements at the terminal. This is particularly useful when travelling with luggage before continuing to a separate activity meeting point.

Treat airport transport and an excursion as separate parts of the plan. The wine-country outing on this page includes pickup, drop-off and travel between venues in Queenstown, Arrowtown and Gibbston. It is a sightseeing outing rather than an airport transfer. Wine tastings and meals should be budgeted separately from its listed transport and guide services.

Car hire and parking

A hire car from ZQN can suit a day linking scattered destinations in Kawarau Gorge, Gibbston and Cromwell. Build the route around the places you actually want to visit, with time for each stop, rather than using a single driving estimate for the entire river. Compare collection and return arrangements with your flight schedule.

The bridge centre has free visitor parking, including space for campervans and coaches. That applies to the visitor car park and viewing area; follow the arrangements on site for access around the historic structure. A daytime parking place also needs to be considered separately from permission to stay overnight.

For wine visits, organised transport lets the itinerary work around tastings without making a member of your party the driver. The Gibbston Valley guide explains the wine area and river trail, while where to stay compares practical bases for the next morning.

Road distances and regional journeys

The bridge centre gives Queenstown to the centre as 23 km and about 25 minutes, and Cromwell to the centre as 27 km and about 30 minutes via SH6. These are separate road estimates with different starting points. Allow for traffic, stops and check-in rather than applying either estimate to a departure from the airport.

Regional bus links connect Queenstown and Cromwell with other Otago destinations. Select a service using its actual stop and timetable, then plan the final leg to the attraction. A regional arrival in Cromwell and a local connection within Queenstown solve different parts of the journey. Keep the return trip in the plan before committing to an outward ride.

Arrival questions

Can I pay for Orbus with a credit card?

Use a Bee Card or cash. The adult Bee Card fare is NZD 2.50 under the tariff dated 29 September 2026; the airport cash fare is NZD 10.

Is Kawarau Falls the historic bungy bridge?

They are different locations. Kawarau Falls is at the lake outlet; use the historic suspension bridge destination for the bridge visitor centre.

Does the wine excursion collect from the airport?

Its pickup and drop-off serve the outing between the wine-country venues. Arrange a separate airport journey and use the pickup point specified for the excursion.
