Choosing your Kawarau River rafting trip

Kawarau River rafting puts the focus on the river rather than a short ride above it. The guided activity uses Grade 2 to 3 whitewater, with paddling and a safety briefing built into the outing. That grade describes the rapids; it is not a promise that everyone can take part. Swimming ability, weight, age and health requirements matter when choosing this day.

The two packages offer a straightforward choice. Rafting alone suits a day centred on the raft, while the combination adds a jet boat transfer. Both start from Queenstown and include bus travel between town and the rafting base. Compare the jet boat options if the powered ride is your main interest, or use the excursion guide to compare other ways of spending the day.

Rafting alone or the jet boat combination

The rafting package includes a one-hour rafting experience, experienced guides, an extensive safety briefing and return bus transfers. Its listed overall duration is four hours. All rafting and safety equipment is included: wetsuit, wetsuit jacket, spray jacket, paddle, helmet, wetsuit booties and life jacket. Hot showers are also included. Food, drinks and accommodation pickup are outside this package.

The combination has a listed duration of four and a half hours and includes a 25-minute jet boat transfer as well as the one-hour rafting experience. It also includes the bus transfers, guides, briefing, rafting equipment and hot showers. Choose it for the extra powered-water activity within the outing. Keep that transfer separate from the time spent paddling; the total duration covers considerably more than the river section.

Swimming, age and health requirements

Participants must be at least 13 years old and weigh between 40 and 120 kg. Anyone under 18 needs responsible adult accompaniment or parental consent. You must be able to swim 25 m independently and have moderate fitness. A life jacket is part of the equipment, but swimming ability remains a participation requirement. Consider each person in your party individually before choosing the same activity for everyone.

Pregnancy and heart conditions exclude participation. Tell the rafting team about medical concerns rather than using the whitewater grade as a personal health assessment. You must understand the safety instructions in English or have a companion who can translate them. Make room for that briefing in your plans: it is part of the activity, not time to skip in order to reach the water sooner.

Meeting point, season and time on the river

The meeting point is 88 Beach Street in Queenstown, with arrival 20 minutes beforehand. The general rafting activity guidance allows about four and a half hours overall and one to one and a half hours on the river. The bookable packages specify their own overall durations and one-hour rafting component. Arrange your day around the selected package, including the return transfer, rather than treating the whole outing as continuous rafting.

The operating season is November to March, subject to weather, water level and water temperature. A date inside those months does not assure a departure. Leave some room in your schedule for changing river conditions and confirm the minimum-participant arrangement 24 hours beforehand. Our season and weather guide helps place this activity within a wider visit; the transport guide covers reaching Queenstown and the different river locations.

Bodyboarding is a different water sport

Bodyboarding is another activity to consider, with a board rather than a seat in a raft. Treat it as a separate sport when discussing preferences with your group. The tours page includes that alternative alongside other excursions. It is useful to decide first whether you want to paddle as part of a raft crew or choose a different form of river activity.

The Kawarau is a powerful river with rapids and deeply cut sections. Joining an organised rafting outing should not be treated as permission for independent swimming elsewhere along its banks. If others in your party prefer to stay out of the water, consider a separate visit to the historic suspension bridge rather than planning an informal swimming stop around the rafting trip.
