What a Gibbston e-bike tour covers
A Gibbston e-bike tour is a self-guided ride through the Gibbston Valley, the Central Otago wine district about 25 minutes by car from downtown Queenstown. The Gibbston River Trail anchors it: 8.7 km of grade 2 (easy) gravel that starts at the Kawarau Bungy Centre and takes 1 to 2 hours by bike. The path runs high above the river cliffs rather than beside the water, so you look down on the gorge instead of riding along it.
The rides below stretch that trail into full days. Some add the Arrow River Bridges Trail from Arrowtown, one starts at Coronet Peak, and every one comes with a shuttle. Prices are per person as of November 2026.

Four self-guided rides, one by one
The $101.67 ride is a six-hour plan with an e-bike, helmet, pannier bag and gel seat cover, plus 20% off bungy activities at the Kawarau Bungy Centre. You meet at the departure point by 10 am for an immediate start, and a shuttle is part of the ticket. It suits riders who want the kit packed and the bungy discount for the same day.
The $94 ride lasts 6.5 hours and has two possible start points, depending on the option you book. It follows the Arrowtown to Gibbston line, roughly 23 km of grade 2 trail and 3 to 4 hours of riding, and a shuttle takes you from Gibbston back to Arrowtown. It comes with premium e-bike hire, a MIPS helmet, a mini repair kit, pannier and handlebar bags, a trail map with the wineries marked and trail support.
The $89 ride runs 6 to 7 hours and is the longest route. It starts at Waikaka Church near Coronet Peak, passes through Arrowtown and crosses the Arrow River bridges to Gibbston, about 32 km at grade 1 to 2. A return shuttle runs from the Gibbston finish back to Waikaka Church. The price covers e-bike hire, a helmet, pannier bags, a gel seat cover, puncture and chain repair kits, a phone holder, a trail map and a ride guide app. Not included are transfers from your Queenstown accommodation to Waikaka Church and back, and wine and food.
The $58 ride starts at 3 Searle Lane in Queenstown and fills 5 to 7.5 hours. You get a mountain bike or an e-bike depending on the option, a helmet, a winery map, a briefing on trail navigation and safety, and shuttle transportation.
What separates the prices
The $58 ride lets you choose a mountain bike or an e-bike; the other three are e-bike rides that add panniers, repair kits, seat covers or trail support. Wine tastings and food are not part of the price on three of the four rides, so cellar-door stops cost extra on the day. The Gibbston Valley guide covers the tasting side if wine is the main reason you are riding.
Trail conditions and what to bring
The surface is gravel with climbs, descents and steep drops in places. The Gibbston River Trail crosses the Gibbston Highway twice, where traffic moves at 100 km/h: stop, let vehicles pass and dismount to cross where you can. New Zealand law requires a properly fitted, fastened helmet, and all four rides include one.
Most of the trail network stays open all year. Heavy rain can make sections hard to ride and winter brings snow and ice. In November 2026 the Swain Bridge on the connected Arrow River Bridges Trail is closed, with a signed detour in place. Bring water, warm layers, sun protection and a way to pay at cellar doors. Operators can decline riders who are not fit enough for the day, and the longer routes of 23 to 32 km ask more than the 8.7 km trail alone. Our best time to visit page helps you pick the season.
Gibbston e-bike tour: practical questions
How far is a Gibbston e-bike tour?
The Gibbston River Trail alone is 8.7 km and takes 1 to 2 hours by bike. The full-day rides cover about 23 km from Arrowtown to Gibbston, with 3 to 4 hours of riding, or about 32 km from Coronet Peak. Total times run from 5 to 7.5 hours including the shuttle.
How much does it cost?
Prices run from $58 to $101.67 per person as of November 2026. The $58 ride starts in Queenstown with a mountain bike or e-bike, while the $89, $94 and $101.67 rides are e-bike rides with extra kit.
Is the shuttle included?
Yes, all four rides include shuttle transport. One returns you from Gibbston to Arrowtown, another from the Gibbston finish to Waikaka Church near Coronet Peak, and the Queenstown ride includes shuttle transportation as part of the package.
Do I need to be an experienced cyclist?
The Gibbston River Trail is grade 2 (easy), and the longer routes are graded 1 to 2 or 2. The gravel surface has climbs and descents, which an e-bike makes easier. Your fitness and health still need to suit a ride of several hours.
